This two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of four), an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance!
In The 39 Steps, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale! A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening of pure pleasure!

NOTE: All cast members must be able to speak with appropriate European accents.
The Characters
Richard Hannay - 20s-50s, male identifying character. gnc/non-binary/male-presenting/male, any race/ethnicity. The Hitchcock thriller leading man, a suave, dashing, classic Hollywood Hero. Starting the show as an adrift everyman, he finds his inner reserves of determination and strength to push through the adventures forced upon him. Performer must have strong physical comedy skills, English accent.
Annabella Schmidt / Pamela / Margaret - 20s-50s, female identifying character. Gnc/Non-binary/femme presenting/ female, any race/ethnicity. This performer takes the three Leading Lady roles. Should have solid physical and comedic skills and create three distinct characters:
- Annabella - The femme fatale, a spy who brings Hannay into the conspiracy. Dangerous and in danger, she should have an air of mystery and threat.
- Pamela - The Hitchcock leading lady, she is principled, brilliant, and resourceful. English accent.
- Margaret - The ingenue, she is a Scottish woman stuck in a loveless marriage who helps Hannay out of a tight spot in hopes of seeing broader horizons. Scottish accent.
Clowns - Any age, any gender(s), any race/ethnicity. Non-binary performers encouraged. These two performers take on all the other roles. Working together, they weave a tapestry of characters to fill out the world of The 39 Steps. Strong character choices and physical acting required, and flexibility with various European accents preferred.
